Vo Trong Nghia Architect: Restaurant of Jardines de Mexico

Two restaurants and a circular event center are being designed in “Jardines de Mexico”, a new botanical garden near Cuernavaca, Mexico, that is expected to open in 2013.
Three pure bamboo buildings, each boasting more than 1,000 square meters, have been designed with very different structural concepts.
Hill Restaurant is an open bamboo structure located on a hillock. The floor of the building steps down according to its topography, covered by a large flat roof supported by bamboo mushroom columns. One bamboo mushroom column consists of approximately 160 bamboos, spreading over the roof area of 36m2 (6 x 6m).
Lake Restaurant’s structure is composed of rows of pointed arches, like a gothic cathedral, creating a space as if in the midst of a bamboo forest. The interior space, with a simple rectangular plan, is open to the surrounding landscape so the scenery can be enjoyed in the same way as Hill Restaurant.
Event Center is also located at the lakeside, facing the Lake Restaurant. It is the largest bamboo dome ever created, containing a circular hall with a diameter of 30 meters for activities such as balls, shows and music performances. The hall is surrounded by a three-meter-wide terrace, and both the hall and the terrace are covered with a large thatched roof with a diameter of 36 meters. The building is composed of 36 bamboo arch units, which balance on one leg, creating the dome space and overhang for the terrace at the same time.
Taking into consideration the characteristics of the Guadua species of bamboo in Mexico, which is firmer and harder than those in Vietnam, we designed the curvature of bent bamboos to be smaller than usual to create a unique expression of Mexican bamboo architecture.
The construction will be carried out by a collaboration of Vietnamese and Mexican workers. The project continues to demonstrate the expansion of applications of bamboo structure throughout the world.
